Vann House Days - 18th Century Cherokee History

Dive into the daily life of a 17-18th century family! Volunteers will demonstrate a variety of 19th century skills such as blacksmithing, herbology, churning butter, quilting, weaving, blow guns, pottery and more. The house and grounds will be open for tours.

All activities are weather permitting Activities at the Museum Visit the Friends of the Vann House table, watch our 15 minute film “Walking in Two Worlds,” visit with our Vann House Quilters, try quilting for yourself! Inside the Historic Vann House Tour the house from root cellar to attic, hosted by Friends of the Vann House volunteers. Dinning Room: Doll Making, make a handkerchief doll for yourself. Guest Room: Beading, make your own beaded craft. South Lawn Try your hand at using a Stickball racket, staff will demonstrate a longbow and blowgun. Inside the Two Story Cabin Butter Churning with Friends of the Vann House volunteers. Upstairs, watch weaver Nancy Adams demonstrate weaving on an antique loom. Along the brick path Say ‘hi’ to the Murray County Pilot Club and Georgia Trail of Tears Association. Visit with a local potter, artist Karmen James. At the Cherokee Farmstead Leather Britches: see an old Appalachian method of food preservation, learn how to do it! Corn Grinding: Learn how the Cherokee would grow and prepare this native plant. Three Sisters Garden: Learn about sustainable farming practices used by the Cherokee.Local herbologist Gwen Fisher will be on hand to talk about medicinal herbs in our Medicine Garden. East Lawn Abby the Archeobus! Step inside this traveling classroom to talk to archaeologists from the Society for Georgia Archaeology (Saturday only). Blacksmithing: Join Ethan Calhoun to see a demonstration.
