Status: Archived Women served in many capacities during the American Civil War. They played vital roles both on and off the battlefields. One field that women were particularly successful in was medicine and nursing. The only woman to every receive The Congressional Medal of Honor was a doctor for The Union, captured and imprisoned at Andersonville.
