History Hike - Follow in the Steps of the CCC

Hard Labor Creek State Park - Rutledge, GA
This ranger-led hike will take visitors along Lake Rutledge on a portion of our Beach Trail, and then up to see one of the only Civilian Conservation Corps Camps left standing in America. Participants will learn about CCC and Hard Labor Creek history. Hike geared toward active participants 8 years old and above. Pre-registration required Parking fee required. 706-557-3001.

Fire is a powerful tool that has many important applications in forest management. Prescribed fires have a history going back thousands of years. Join a ranger on a 1.5 mile hike to learn about the importance of prescribed fires, and how they help prevent wildfires. Ages 6+ Parking fee required. 706-557-3001.

Fungi exist everywhere around us, and in all shapes and sizes. Join a ranger in this mushroom workshop where you will learn about the different parts of a mushroom, how to ID mushrooms, and common mushrooms you may find in Hard Labor Creek. The program consists of a 1-mile hike where we will look for fungi along the way test your ID skills. $3 plus parking fee required. 706-557-3001.

Join a ranger to learn how the plants around us have been used historically, both for food and for survival crafts. Hike and Paddle - Girl Scouts Love State Parks -
Saturday, Sep 12, 2026 3 PM to 5:30 PM
Hard Labor Creek State Park - Rutledge, GA
Enjoy a ranger led hike (1.5 hour) along our new beach trail as we walk by swamps, hardwood/pine forests and a controlled burn area. After the hike, we'll kayak (1 hour) on the lake looking for wildlife such as raptors, herons and migrating birds. Wear closed toe shoes, bring water, bug repellent and sunscreen. Registration will open August 24. $30 if you use our kayaks. $25 if you use yours parking fee required. 706-557-3001.
