Beetles Save Needles!

Wednesday, Jun 25, 2025 (2 PM to 3 PM)

Love our shady trails? Thank a Hemlock! But these forest giants are under attack by a tiny pest—the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. Join us for an exciting and educational experience as we discuss what scientists are doing to combat this invasive species. Meet us in the Visitors Center Arch Room!

The hemlock is a beloved tree of Appalachia, and there is an invasive pest; the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid that affects the Hemlock. These pesky critters latch onto the stems and needles of the Hemlock and extract the sap, thus depleting the tree of its nutrients. In this program, join a naturalist as we cover how to identify these invasive critters and learn how scientists use biocontrol beetles to manage the adelgid populations and ensure our trees continue to thrive! All ages are welcome! Find us in the Visitors Center Arch Room.

-We will be on the Appalachian Approach Trail briefly for a field exercise, we encourage guests to wear closed toed shoes, and bring water!
