Juneteenth Commemoration

Saturday, Jun 20, 2026 (10:30 AM to 12 PM)

Join Freedom Stories, a guided walk to Broadfield Cemetery exploring the lives of formerly enslaved individuals who found freedom. Through powerful personal stories, visitors will reflect on resilience, hardship, and the enduring human pursuit of liberty in coastal Georgia’s past.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site invites the public to step into the past and encounter powerful stories of perseverance and freedom during a special interpretive program titled Freedom Stories.

This guided program will take visitors on a short walk to the historic Broadfield Cemetery, where the lives of individuals once born into slavery—and later freed—will be shared in the very place where they are laid to rest. Among those featured are Boney Gibson, who served aboard the USS New Hampshire during the Civil War; Frederick Proudfoot, coachman at Elizafield Plantation prior to emancipation; and Duncan Nelson, who rose from enslavement to become pastor of Broadfield Church and a local store owner.

Through these deeply personal accounts, Freedom Stories highlights resilience, faith, and determination, offering a meaningful look at the transition from slavery to freedom in coastal Georgia. Set within the quiet and reflective landscape of the cemetery, the program provides a space for remembrance, reflection, and connection.
